The depths of thought

Tue Jul 31, 2007, 2:09 AM
An essay for my art history class, which is about what you think is art,a few people told me it was an interesting read so here is it for ya all.

What is Art
What is art, a question, that has any different answers, that applies to many different individuals. In all cases, however the basic underlined theme of an individual’s belief of that which is art is commonly a subject or object that invokes an emotional response. Rather this response is a positive or negative one, is not the importance, but rather the feeling of being alive is.
To me art is an internal response inside me, which brings worth a feeling of being alive, through the cycle of every day living. Through out life, events appear and then go by, objects are seen and then disappear, memories are formed and then vanish, life is like a ride from each event we grow as a person, experiencing new and unique events, and going through the mundane events of daily life. As the unknown becomes know, the mind begins to drift seeing everything as normal, thus the mind enters a state of seeking new and unique objects and events, in its never ending quest to sustain its curiosity and growth. From this many different art forms have appeared over the coarse of human history. Some being small, handheld items, others being giant stone structures that defy time itself. As you may be asking what this has to do with what I consider art; the answer to that is that is has everything to do with what I believe art is and nothing to do with my views of art.
When I see the ancient wonders of the world, I gasp in amazement at the sheer talent and effort it took to make them, however I hunger for more. The questions appear why was this made, why is it that size, how did this idea come into being. In a sense I am looking beyond the art and into the history of the art. Thus instead of staying an emotional response I enter into a scientific response being forth questions to the subject at hand. Which could be taken as a strange way to respond to art, for as I have stated previously that art will invoke an emotional response, however while it did for a moment in time, it has changed into a scientific response.
Through the transfer from responses, another event occurs. With each experience after the original occurrence, the response becomes less and less, bringing forth the concept that over time every thing will slowly lose its grip on the human heart. Cause once something becomes a normal event in our lives; it loses the uniqueness in our minds and become mundane. This continues to happen till the only reason we know the object/thought/event is art cause we have told ourselves that it is. Thus in all reality we brainwash ourselves to try to keep the meaning of a moment in our past. This can then also be applied to objects/thought/events that we do not consider art, for once we do not except that the spoken object as art we do not tell ourselves throughout life that it is and it becomes just a normal object even less amazing than the now mundane art that we tell ourselves is art.
So what does this all lead to? In the end if there an end, it leads to everything and nothing, it is merely apart of the cycle that is our lives. The desire to experience new events in our lives is what keeps us moving forward. Without the drive there would be no meaning in life, and without life there would be no meaning. As such the purpose which the prior words have been leading up to, is that art itself is that desire. Art is the ever evolving desire within each one of us, the desire to experience the world and bring forth that feeling that we are indeed alive, that our life does have a purpose and that we each day are bringing forth the purpose for our existence in this world. Thus all past works of art leading up to the present day and the works that have yet to have been brought into life are someone’s attempt are greatness, to reach the point in life, that will be remember by themselves and others. From having a resting place for the world to see eons later, to leading your country to the conquest of the entire known world, or writing about events that have yet to occur, or making plays that will inspire peoples emotions centuries later, to fighting the common beliefs to bring forth the truth of the world, all of these are peoples legacies, these are what they will be remember for, long after anyone remembers how the person was in everyday life. They shall be remember for the great accomplishments they did in their lives, and will inspire future generations to surpass them, in order to reach that level of immortally throughout the ages so that future generations of people shall talk about them and how their accomplishments have changed the world forever, and then this generation with continue the cycle again.
In conclusion art is what the human mind makes it. Art will continue to evolve from generation to generation, allowing people to which a state of immortally from the actions they shall do in their lives, thus allowing future generations to aspire to the past and continue the cycle as new individuals will take it upon themselves to surpass the past, leading humanity to enter new ages of enlightenment, keeping the spark of life alive till the end of time.
